In May of 2018, the Psychonomic Society Leading Edge Workshop titled “Time for Action: Reaching for a Better Understanding of the Dynamics of Cognition” was held in Amsterdam. The overarching goal of the workshop was to share and discuss data and theoretical perspectives that advance the understanding of how cognition and action systems are integrated and operate synergistically. This digital event continued the discussion of those issues and celebrated the publication of a special issue of Attention, Perception, & Psychophysics dedicated to the role of action in cognition.
The following posts, listed in their order of publication, contributed to the event:
- Joo-Hyun Song and Timothy Welsh, guest editors of the special issue, kicked off the event with some background information.
- Laurel Buxbaum reviewed how eyegaze can reveal object-related action and goal knowledge.
- Michael Spivey expanded the purview of what makes the mind: It’s not just the information taken in by the brain, it’s also the information expressed out by the brain and body.
- Rick Dale examined recent work on the integration of gestures and speech, and the effect of integration on comprehension.
- Antonia Hamilton placed action into its evolutionary context.
- Giovanni Pezzulo reviewed how models of perception and action evolved, from serial to embodied decision making.
